Why is Virtualization so important to Businesses?

March 28, 2012

For one thing, a rule of thumb in the age of technology is, “the less hardware, the better”. The less hardware a business has to depend on, the odds of a catastrophic event destroying all of your hard earned data is narrowed by a landslide.

Consider a company structure where the employee must travel, and is issued a company laptop. This system is very useful, but you also risk the chance of having the hardware and confidential data stolen. For many companies, data holds more value than hardware, and virtualization eliminates that issue completely.

Here is how it works:

A virtual desktop is an individual user’s interface in a virtualized environment. The virtualized desktop is stored on a remote server rather than locally. Desktop virtualization software separates the physical machine from the software and presents an isolated operating system for users.

More Benefits to Virtualization:

  • Cost savings because the resources can be shared with other users.
  • Can be used on an as-needed basis.
  • More efficient use of space, resources, and energy.
  • Improved data integrity because back-up is centralized.
  • Fewer compatibility issues.

See what the people think.

The concept of what “The Cloud” truly is and why everyone is rushing to get there can be intimidating to some. Our technical team can help simplify these concepts and explain their extensive benefits to you. Orange County Computer offers custom Cloud Computing Solutions for Small to Mid-Market companies. From single hosted applications to completely virtual environments, we offer custom designed virtual environments unique to your organization. Held Hostage By Your Computer Guy?

January 13, 2012

Has your IT Provider locked down your company network and disappeared? Do you believe that your In-House IT Guy is talking over your head to direct your focus away from their incompetencies?

Orange County Computer receives frequent phone calls from frustrated business owners inquiring about our services and how they can phase-out their existing In-House IT Guy or Outsourced IT Vendor who is holding them hostage. Many times they are contacting us in secret so a member of our team can relinquish administrative rights to that company network and give the business owner the rightful access to their company that they deserve. The technology industry isn’t safeguarded against the unsavory professional that falls short of basic business ethics. It’s important to choose wisely who you entrust with your company data, financial information and intellectual property and client contacts

Here are a few tips when either transitioning or hiring a Technology Service Provider for the first time:

  1. Ask for both previous and current references – It is important to confirm how both current and past clients rate service and professionalism.
  2. Verify partnerships or certifications that you are hiring the vendor for. For example, if you are running or want to run in a Microsoft Server Operating System Environment, it would be wise to confirm that the company is qualified and certified to help you or obtain support services in mission critical situations.
  3. Confirm exactly how many employees the IT Vendor has on staff. Lack of staffing resources during mission critical times can cost clients thousands of dollars in lost revenue.
  4. Personally visit the location of the business you are hiring to work for you. It is important to know where your IT Vendor conducts business. This may help to confirm or rule out a possible candidate. A “one man show” working from home might not align with the needs of your organization.

The team at Orange County Computer hopes this information has been useful. If you have found this blog post and your network is currently being held hostage by your IT Vendor, we are here to help.

Could new wireless network render GPS devices useless?

March 10, 2011

By Alan Levin, USA TODAY

A new high-speed wireless network given initial approval for installation across the nation could cause severe disruptions to GPS signals, rendering everything from car-navigation systems to jet-flight controls useless, industry groups and government agencies charge.

A trade group called The Coalition to Save Our GPS is announcing its formation today, and on Friday a representative for the Global Positioning System industry will testify on the issue before the House Commerce Appropriations Subcommittee.

The Federal Communications Commission wants the LightSquared network to begin serving 100 million customers by the end of next year. Several government agencies, including the Federal Aviation Administration and the Commerce Department, have raised concerns that the technology could cause conflicts with GPS systems.

Microsoft Windows 7 phones launch October 11

October 4, 2010

October 4, 2010

It’s about to be put up or shut up time for Microsoft in mobile. On October 11, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets CEO Ralph de la Vega will be conducting a New York City press conference to spill the beans on the widely anticipated Windows Phone 7 smartphones.

Microsoft has been rather immobile in the smartphone biz these past few years. The company’s handsets have been overshadowed by Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android devices, and Research In Motion’s BlackBerry. Recent efforts by the company to turn things around in mobile have proved disastrous–witness the summer demise, after less than two months in the market, of the company’s youth-oriented Kin handsets.

Now comes the Windows Phone 7 devices the company has been talking up for months. In an interview Monday, Ballmer told the Wall Street Journal, “we’ve got to move forward, not shoot for yesterday. We’ve got to shoot ahead in a way that’s delightful to users, accessible to developers and prioritize everything else we do around those elements.”

But the competition is brutal and getting more so. Microsoft has to persuade developers to play along and consumers that Windows Phone 7 phones are worthy of their consideration. Neither task will be easy.

The Windows Phone 7 phones certainly represent a major departure from the way Microsoft used to do business in mobile. The interface on demonstration phones features colorful and dynamic tiles built around activities and software. The design resembles Microsoft Zune music players more than Windows on a PC.

StartTalking lets drivers send texts by voice

September 30, 2010

Distracted driving is dangerous. Boston-based AdelaVoice says it has come up with a free Android app called StartTalking to address the issue.

StartTalking is billed as the world’s first smartphone app that lets motorists keep their eyes glued to the road and hands upon the wheel when composing a text. The company claims that unlike other text messaging apps that require you to peek at or touch the handset at some point, StartTalking is all voice-controlled all the way. There’s no need to open any app or navigate menus. It can even operate when the phone screen is dark or the keypad is locked You simply bark out a pre-assigned name to “wake up” the phone and start StartTalking. Following audio prompts—”Speak to create a text message for Ed or say ‘cancel,’” you can dictate and properly route your message. StartTalking can play back texts too.

You can have StartTalking send regular text messages to a mobile phone or have it send audio recordings in your own voice to the device. Though free, Adela plans to extend its technology to third party developers, and expects to charge down the road for premium services. The app, which is still in beta, will be available in the Android Market store on Thursday. Adela also plans to develop versions for other smartphone platforms.
