Laptops

At the Orange County Computer Tech Repair Center, we encounter numerous laptop repair issues. By far, the most common laptop repair we encounter at Orange County Computer, Inc. is the DC Jack (the plug that accepts power on the laptop). There are several factors that contribute to this hardware failure but the two most common are poor handling and poor design. All major brand laptops have this connection internally connected to the laptop motherboard.
Every day abuse of plugging and unplugging the AC power source wears down the solder connections on the motherboard. Here are the two common symptoms for this damage:
- The laptop will not accept external AC Power. The system runs continuously on the battery, until the battery dies.
- You have move the power cord around until it starts accepting external power.
To avoid the cost of a DC Jack repair, Orange County Computer, Inc. has made some recommendations for you, the laptop user.
1st: Avoid moving the laptop while the power cable is plugged into the DC Jack. This will prevent wear and tear on the internal DC Jack connection.
2nd: Avoid stretching the power cable to its furthest length at anything but a straight angle. Bending the power cable with enough pressure will damage the DC Jack. By keeping slack on the cable or using a straight angle will prevent pressure applied directly to the soldering supporting the DC Jack.
3rd: Keep your laptop supported on a hard even surface such as a table or desk. Using your laptop while connected to the AC power cable on an uneven surface such as a sofa or bed can force undue pressure on the DC Jack.

Many people have dropped their notebook computers damaging the case and breaking the LCD screen. While expensive, these disasters can be overcome by using less expense sources for laptop parts. So before you throw away that laptop computer, call us for that important “second opinion”.
