The most simple fom of backup begins within an existing network that typically has a built in backup that we find to be improperly setup or turned off by mistake. This is a network configuration that can be deemed extremely unreliable if the wrong person is “administering” a network. Off-Site Backup is a secondary layer of backup located in a completely different location from the source. There can be an Earthquake, Tornado, Power Outage, Fire, Flood or Theft that can physically devastate a business. CONSOLIDATION OF BACK UP EQUIPMENT:

Drive to drive file transfers via high speed Internet dramatically reduces the backup window time. TERMS:
LAN (Local Area Network) – A physical location where all nodes or PC’s, Laptops, Servers and appliances are linked securely together by a common Network. A simplified LAN would consist of one Server, several PC’s, a Router, Switch and Ethernet cable linking the devices together. In contrast a WAN (Wide Area Network) utilizes the Internet to link two or more LAN’s together.
Fail Over – Utilizes redundant systems. In the event that one system fails and secondary system is in place to insure availability of resources.
NAS (Network Attached Storage) – Storage with redundant disks for failover that is directly attached to the LAN via IP Address rather than attached to a single device such as a server.
SAN (Storage Area Network) – Storage with redundant disks for failover that is directly attached to the LAN via IP Address rather than attached to a single device such as a server. SAN’s typically allow for greater performance and file transfer speed due to Fiber Optic architecture.
